About Amphitheater Campground
Perched dramatically on a mountainside just a mile above the historic town of Ouray, Colorado, Amphitheater Campground defies expectations with its stunning views of the namesake natural rock amphitheater, a striking formation shaped by ancient volcanic activity. This campground offers a serene escape for nature lovers, with shaded sites tucked among Gambel oaks and mixed conifers, creating an intimate and picturesque camping experience.
The 35 campsites are thoughtfully arranged along tight loops, accommodating tents and smaller RVs or trailers (up to 35 feet in length). Each site comes equipped with a picnic table, campfire ring, and lantern post, and the campground provides essentials like vault toilets, potable water, and trash collection. Accessible trails such as the Upper Cascade Falls Trail begin directly from the campground, while nearby routes lead to popular destinations like Baby Bath Tubs and Chief Ouray Mine. Wildlife viewing, hiking, and off-road trail adventures abound in the immediate area, making it ideal for both relaxation and exploration.
Located at an elevation of 8,400 feet within the Uncompahgre National Forest, Amphitheater Campground is just a short drive (less than five minutes) into Ouray, often referred to as "America's Switzerland." The town offers a mix of historic charm, dining, shopping, and soothing hot springs. Outdoor enthusiasts will also appreciate the proximity to the Million Dollar Highway for breathtaking scenic drives. With its combination of natural beauty, proximity to vibrant local attractions, and a peaceful mountain atmosphere, this campground is particularly well-suited for weekend getaways or extended stays focused on hiking and immersing in Colorado’s rugged terrain.
