About Anchor River State Recreation Area

What sets Anchor River State Recreation Area apart is its unique combination of sprawling riverfront landscapes, stunning ocean vistas, and its reputation as a fishing paradise. Located at the westernmost point of the U.S. highway system in Anchor Point, Alaska, the campground places visitors steps away from some of the best salmon and steelhead fishing waters in the state, with breathtaking views of the Aleutian Range and Cook Inlet’s snow-capped volcanoes.

The recreation area features five campgrounds—Halibut, Silverking, Coho, Slidehole, and Steelhead—each catering to a range of camping styles. The Halibut Campground is particularly notable, offering beachside sites with magnificent mountain views, frequent eagle sightings, and premium access to the beach and a boat launch. While the campgrounds are simple, with gravel sites, fire rings, picnic tables, and clean pit toilets, they provide a rustic charm ideal for adventure-focused campers. However, visitors must come self-sufficient, as there are no RV hookups or dedicated drinking water facilities.

Situated just off the Sterling Highway, the campground is approximately a 15-minute drive from Homer, a quaint town celebrated for its seafood and cultural attractions. The recreation area’s serene location and proximity to rich fishing waters, sandy beaches, and hiking trails make it an excellent choice for fishing enthusiasts, weekend getaways, or a nature-immersed stopover during a road trip on the Kenai Peninsula.
