About Apple River Canyon State Park
Apple River Canyon State Park’s Canyon Ridge Campground offers a serene retreat in the scenic Driftless Area of northwest Illinois, featuring dramatic limestone bluffs, lush ravines, and the tranquil flow of the Apple River. Ideal for those seeking a rustic, nature-immersive experience, this campground consists of 49 Class "C" sites for tents or small RVs, all nestled amid greenery with fire rings and picnic tables, but no electrical or water hookups. Additionally, the park provides a group camping area with six sites, accommodating larger gatherings.
Located near the quaint town of Apple River, this campground is perfect for weekend getaways or extended stays focused on quiet reflection and outdoor exploration. Visitors can enjoy five scenic hiking trails, some winding alongside the river and bluffs, as well as excellent fishing for smallmouth bass and stocked trout in spring. The campground’s limited amenities include drinking water wells and well-maintained pit toilets but no showers, making it best suited for campers prepared to disconnect and enjoy the simplicity of nature.
Within 30 minutes, attractions such as Apple Canyon Lake and its golf course, as well as the historic town of Galena, offer opportunities for day trips featuring local culture and additional recreation. Whether hiking through the Driftless terrain or stargazing under a dark, peaceful sky, Apple River Canyon State Park's campground is a haven for those eager to experience nature's raw beauty.
