Campground Overview
About Big Cove Campground
Big Cove Campground, perched at 5,700 feet near the shimmering waters of Frenchman Lake in northeastern California, offers an idyllic blend of tranquil forest surroundings and lakefront recreation. This well-maintained campground defies expectations with its accessibility to both lush pine forests and high desert landscapes, providing a unique setting that caters to adventurers and nature enthusiasts alike.
The campground features 38 single-family campsites equipped with picnic tables, fire rings, and grates, suitable for both tent and RV camping. Amenities include coin-operated showers, flush toilets, and potable water, ensuring comfort while maintaining a back-to-nature experience. Some sites even boast views of Frenchman Lake or nearby sagebrush meadows. Wildlife, including black bears, frequently visits the area, adding a touch of wilderness for campers to appreciate. Additionally, there are 14 primitive, first-come-first-serve sites across the road with basic amenities, although these lack potable water.
Located within Plumas National Forest, Big Cove Campground is just 10 miles from the small town of Chilcoot and approximately a 30-minute drive from other attractions such as Sierra Valley, the largest valley in the Sierra Nevada. Outdoor enthusiasts can enjoy water-based activities like kayaking, paddle boarding, and fishing at Frenchman Lake, as well as biking and hiking trails scattered through the forested terrain. The scenic Little Last Chance Canyon and surrounding forest roads also invite exploration, making this campground a hub for both relaxation and adventure.
