About Butte Lake Campground
Butte Lake Campground in Lassen Volcanic National Park offers a distinctive retreat for nature enthusiasts seeking tranquility, volcanic landscapes, and outdoor recreation. Tucked away in the park’s remote northeastern corner, the campground sits amidst towering Ponderosa pines and soft volcanic soils, offering a serene escape from city life with easy access to Butte Lake.
The campground features 101 campsites that cater to tents, trailers, and RVs (up to 35 feet). Each site is equipped with essential amenities like fire rings, picnic tables, and food storage lockers. Seasonal flush and vault toilets are available, along with potable water, but there are no water or electrical hookups. A gravel boat ramp near the lake invites visitors to enjoy non-motorized boating, while the site’s proximity to hiking trails like the iconic Cinder Cone Trail provides adventurers with access to stunning panoramic views of the Painted Dunes and surrounding volcanic formations.
Accessible via a manageable 6-mile gravel road off Highway 44, the campground’s secluded location enhances its peaceful atmosphere. Butte Lake itself is a highlight, featuring rocky shores formed by ancient lava flows and calm waters ideal for kayaking, swimming, and trout fishing. Nearby attractions, including the Subway Cave lava tube and the Caribou Wilderness, are less than 30 minutes away, making Butte Lake Campground an excellent base for exploring the volcanic wonders and diverse ecosystems of the area.
