Campground Overview
About Childs Glacier Recreation Area
What sets the Childs Glacier Recreation Area Campground apart is its unrivaled proximity to the magnificent Childs Glacier, where massive chunks of ice calve dramatically into the Copper River, creating sights and sounds that are truly awe-inspiring. Located in a serene forested setting along the river, this small campground offers a rare chance to camp amidst some of Alaska's most striking natural phenomena while being steeped in the region's rich history.
The campground features 11 tent-only sites, basic but well-maintained amenities including vault toilets, hand-pump drinking water, picnic tables, and a covered pavilion. Its defining feature is the viewing platform, which provides unobstructed views of the glacier's calving action across the river. Wildlife enthusiasts will also appreciate the chance to observe bears, moose, and other fauna, especially near the salmon-filled Copper River. Adjacent trails, such as the Copper River Trail, lead visitors to the nearby historic Million Dollar Bridge, enhancing the experience with a touch of Alaskan heritage.
Situated roughly 48 miles from Cordova, accessing the campground requires boat or air transport, as sections of the Copper River Highway are permanently impassable. Despite the remote access, this destination is ideal for adventurous day trips, weekend escapes, or extended getaways to immerse in the dramatic landscapes of Chugach National Forest and the famed Copper River Delta.
