About Copper Breaks State Park
How often can you camp under some of the darkest skies in Texas while enjoying a rich blend of rugged terrain and history? Copper Breaks State Park Campground, located just 12 miles south of Quanah, Texas, offers an extraordinary experience as one of the few International Dark Sky Parks in the state. This destination is a haven for stargazers, outdoor enthusiasts, and history lovers, with its pristine night skies, expansive trails, and Comanche heritage.
The campground provides a range of options to suit every camper's preference. There are 24 sites with 30- and 50-amp electric hookups, ideal for RVs, as well as water-only sites, equestrian camping, and hike-in primitive camping areas. Each site features picnic tables with teepee-style shade structures, fire rings, and grills, ensuring a comfortable and unique camping atmosphere. Restrooms with showers and a dump station are also available for convenience. The surrounding semi-arid landscape, dotted with juniper, mesquite, and wildflowers, offers stunning vistas and wildlife viewing opportunities across its 1,898 acres.
Situated near the small Lake Copper Breaks and close to the iconic Medicine Mounds, the park’s location invites exploration. Whether hiking scenic trails like the Rocky Ledges Loop, enjoying non-motorized boating on the lake, or fishing off the pier, there’s no shortage of adventure. At night, the park transforms into a celestial theater under vast, unpolluted skies, making it perfect for astronomy enthusiasts. Copper Breaks State Park Campground is an ideal spot for those seeking solitude, natural beauty, and a touch of Texas history, suitable for short getaways, stopovers, or longer vacations.
