Campground Overview
About Cottonwood Campground
Are you searching for a peaceful, off-the-grid camping experience in the heart of Big Bend National Park? Cottonwood Campground sets itself apart with its serene atmosphere, surrounded by towering cottonwood trees that provide welcome shade in the desert environment. Its location near the Rio Grande and iconic sites like Santa Elena Canyon makes it a prime base for exploring the park's western attractions.
This intimate campground offers 24 individual sites and 1 group site, best suited for tents or small RVs (under 24 feet). Amenities are intentionally minimal, with pit toilets, potable water, picnic tables, grills, and bear boxes available, but no electric hookups, dump stations, or generator use permitted. This back-to-basics setup ensures a tranquil environment, perfect for birdwatching, hiking, or stargazing under some of the darkest skies in the U.S.
Situated along the Ross Maxwell Scenic Drive, Cottonwood Campground provides easy access to nearby highlights like the Castolon Historic District and hiking trails such as the Santa Elena Canyon Trail and Tuff Canyon. A general store and visitor center located nearby add a touch of convenience. However, due to its low elevation and summer heat, this campground is best visited in cooler months between November and April.
