Campground Overview
About Cottonwood Canyon State Park
Perched along the scenic banks of the undammed John Day River, Cottonwood Canyon State Park Campground offers an unrivaled retreat into Oregon's rugged beauty, where expansive canyon vistas, clear night skies, and a wealth of outdoor activities define the experience. This remote destination provides a unique balance of wild isolation and thoughtful amenities, catering to adventurers, nature lovers, and stargazing enthusiasts.
The campground features 21 primitive drive-in sites, 14 walk-up tent sites, 7 hiker/biker sites, and 4 rustic, pet-friendly cabins, all complemented by potable water, clean restroom facilities with flush toilets, and hot showers. Though modest in development, the facilities include solar-powered charging stations and wooden windbreaks that provide comfort in this otherwise untamed landscape. Fishing, rafting, and kayaking on the John Day River, as well as an extensive network of hiking and biking trails across over 16,000 acres, make this a haven for active outdoor pursuits. Wildlife sightings often include bald eagles, bighorn sheep, and pronghorn antelope, adding to the allure.
Situated 23 miles south of Wasco, Oregon, Cottonwood Canyon is both accessible and remote, with its proximity to the J.S. Burres day-use area offering a convenient boat launch for river enthusiasts. Recognized as an International Dark Sky Park, the location delivers unparalleled stargazing opportunities, particularly on clear, moonless nights. Cottonwood Canyon is ideal for weekend getaways and extended stays, offering an authentic connection to Eastern Oregon's striking high desert terrain.
