Campground Overview
About East Chickenbone Lake Campground
Nestled in the rugged interior of Isle Royale National Park, East Chickenbone Lake Campground offers a true backcountry experience for adventurers seeking solitude, natural beauty, and a connection to pristine wilderness. This hike-in-only campground is perched within dense forest, just off the eastern end of Chickenbone Lake, with access provided via the East Chickenbone Trail or nearby portage routes.
The campground features three individual tent sites and one group site, all tucked into a wooded setting without direct lake views, maintaining privacy and seclusion. A notable challenge is the descent to the lake to collect water, a task made worthwhile by the serene surroundings. Lacking boater access, this site is better suited for hikers or canoeists willing to portage, as it requires a 1.2-mile carry from McCargoe Cove or a shorter 0.2-mile portage from Lake Livermore.
Located within a 30-minute trek from highlights like the Greenstone Ridge Trail and West Chickenbone Campground, East Chickenbone serves as a crossroads for wilderness exploration. Visitors can immerse themselves in the park’s diverse hiking trails while enjoying the refreshing isolation of this intimate campground. Whether stopping as part of a multi-day trek or for a quiet wilderness escape, East Chickenbone Lake Campground promises an authentic and tranquil Isle Royale experience.
