About Elk Creek Campground
Towering pines and pristine mountain streams create an idyllic Rocky Mountain retreat at Elk Creek Campground, where rustic charm meets outdoor adventure in the heart of Colorado's San Juan Mountains.
This secluded campground offers a quintessential mountain camping experience with its mix of well-shaded sites nestled along the banks of Elk Creek. The campground's location at 8,500 feet elevation provides a cool respite during summer months, while its proximity to hiking trails and fishing spots makes it an ideal base for outdoor enthusiasts. Though amenities are basic, the natural beauty and tranquil setting more than compensate.
Located 23 miles west of Antonito in the Rio Grande National Forest, Elk Creek Campground serves as a gateway to the South San Juan Wilderness. The area is renowned for its trout fishing, with both Elk Creek and the nearby Conejos River offering excellent angling opportunities. Hikers can access several trails directly from the campground, including routes to scenic Duck Lake and into the wilderness area.
