About Elkhead Reservoir State Park
Stepping onto the shores of Elkhead Reservoir State Park's campground, visitors are greeted by panoramic views of the 900-acre reservoir set against a backdrop of rolling sagebrush hills. This oasis in northwest Colorado offers a blend of serene water-based recreation and rugged high desert charm, with well-maintained sites that cater to both RV and tent campers.
The campground features two distinct areas: Bear's Ears, with 16 non-electric sites for a more primitive experience, and Pronghorn, offering 30 electric sites near the shoreline. Each site is equipped with a fire pit, picnic table, and shade shelter, providing essential comforts amidst the arid landscape. While the campground lacks water and sewer hookups, the trade-off is an immersive natural setting where campers can fall asleep to the gentle lapping of waves and wake to unobstructed sunrises over the water.
Located just 9 miles northeast of Craig, Colorado, Elkhead Reservoir State Park serves as an ideal base for exploring the Yampa Valley. The park's 10.5 miles of trails offer opportunities for hiking and mountain biking, while the reservoir itself is a haven for boating, fishing, and swimming. Anglers will appreciate the warm-water fishery, known for its largemouth bass, northern pike, and crappie. Wildlife enthusiasts can spot pronghorn, mule deer, and a variety of bird species that frequent the area.
