About Emigrant Springs State Heritage Area
How often do you get the chance to camp amidst living history while enjoying modern amenities? Emigrant Springs State Heritage Area, located near the summit of the Blue Mountains in eastern Oregon, offers a unique blend of historical significance, lush old-growth forest surroundings, and diverse camping options. This site served as a vital stop on the Oregon Trail, where travelers once rested and replenished at the natural spring, a tradition that modern visitors continue in this serene setting.
The campground boasts 58 campsites, including 18 full-hookup sites, 32 tent sites, and seven equestrian sites, along with six rustic log cabins and a duplex cabin for year-round comfort. Each site features a picnic table, fire ring, and access to clean restrooms with flush toilets and hot showers. Recreational amenities include an amphitheater, basketball court, baseball field, horseshoe pits, and nature trails. While the proximity to I-84 provides convenient access, it does result in some road noise, which campers may want to consider depending on their preferences.
Located roughly 15 miles southeast of Pendleton and 30 minutes west of La Grande, Emigrant Springs serves as an excellent base to explore nearby attractions. These include the Blue Mountain Crossing interpretive site, Pendleton Underground Tours, and winter recreation opportunities such as Nordic skiing and snowmobiling. Whether you're stopping for a brief respite or seeking a longer immersion in the area's history and natural beauty, Emigrant Springs offers a versatile and enriching camping experience.
