Campground Overview
About Fremont Peak State Park
Poised high above the Salinas Valley and Monterey Bay, Fremont Peak State Park Campground offers sweeping vistas, an intimate camping experience, and some of the best stargazing in California. With primitive sites under oak canopies and a renowned observatory, it’s perfect for campers seeking serene surroundings, panoramic views, and celestial wonder.
This small, low-frills campground features 25 tent sites, a group site, fire rings, picnic tables, potable water, and vault toilets—ideal for those wanting a rustic camping experience. The highlight is access to the Fremont Peak summit trail, where hikers are rewarded with spectacular 360-degree views spanning the Gabilan Range, Monterey Bay, and even the Sierra Nevada on clear days. Nights here are particularly special, with minimal light pollution making the observatory’s public star parties a must-visit attraction from April to October.
Located just 11 miles south of San Juan Bautista via a narrow, winding road, this isolated park is a haven for birdwatchers, nature enthusiasts, and amateur astronomers. Within a short drive, visitors can explore the historic charm of San Juan Bautista, while the park itself serves as a tranquil base for weekend escapes or day trips.
