Campground Overview
About Galbraith Lake Campground
What sets Galbraith Lake Campground apart is its raw, untamed beauty, offering unparalleled views of the Brooks Range and a true sense of remoteness rarely experienced elsewhere. Perched on Alaska’s North Slope at Milepost 275 of the rugged Dalton Highway, this primitive campground defies expectations with its spongy tundra, abundant wildlife, and direct access to endless hiking opportunities in untouched wilderness.
The campground features 12 unmarked sites, each equipped with a fire ring and picnic table, situated against the open tundra with commanding mountain views. Though amenities are minimal—vault toilets, bear-proof trash bins, and no potable water or electricity—it excels as a launchpad for hiking and wildlife watching. Nearby, Galbraith Lake lies about a mile to the east, while the surrounding tundra, rivers, and mountain ridges provide habitat for caribou, brown bears, and migratory birds. Adventurers can explore the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge to the east or venture west toward Gates of the Arctic National Park, both within a short hike of this basecamp.
Approximately 365 miles from Fairbanks, the campground is accessible via the Dalton Highway, making it a popular stop for those undertaking an Arctic Circle adventure. Its proximity to the Brooks Range makes it perfect for extended getaways focused on hiking, birding, or simply enjoying the midnight sun in one of the most remote corners of the United States.
