Campground Overview
About Gallagher Canyon State Recreation Area
Tucked away in the quiet seclusion of central Nebraska, Gallagher Canyon State Recreation Area offers a distinctly rustic escape with 24 primitive campsites surrounded by dense woodland and views of the sparkling Melvin Hill Reservoir. This is a destination for campers seeking solitude, natural beauty, and easy access to water-based recreation, from exceptional fishing opportunities to leisurely boating in the no-wake canal system.
The campground features non-pad sites suitable for tents and trailers, equipped with picnic tables, fire pits, and vault toilets—but no electricity, showers, or potable water, making it ideal for those prepared for an off-grid adventure. The adjoining 400-acre reservoir is a haven for anglers pursuing crappie, flathead catfish, or even the occasional walleye, while the 10 miles of navigable canal waterways also connect to Plum Creek Reservoir and Johnson Lake for exploration.
Located approximately 15 minutes from Eustis, Gallagher Canyon offers the tranquility of a remote setting combined with easy access to the region’s renowned fishing and boating opportunities. It is a perfect spot for weekend getaways or short wilderness escapes where the allure of untouched nature reigns supreme.
