About Gate Campground
Carved into the unique geologic formation known as The Gate and set along the pristine Lake Fork of the Gunnison River, The Gate Campground in Powderhorn, Colorado, offers an unmatched blend of scenic beauty, serenity, and outdoor recreation opportunities. With just eight campsites, this Bureau of Land Management (BLM) campground delivers a quiet, intimate camping experience ideal for those seeking respite amidst Colorado's rugged landscapes, paired with easy river access for fishing and picnicking.
The campground is equipped with essential amenities, including vault toilets and a hand pump for potable water, while operating on a pack-it-in, pack-it-out basis to preserve its natural charm. Some of the sites, shaded by trees, are nestled closer to the river, while others are conveniently accessible but located near Highway 149. Whether you prefer stoking a fireside ambiance at the designated fire pits or simply gazing at the Milky Way on a clear night, The Gate caters to both relaxation and immersion in nature.
Situated about 16 miles north of Lake City along the Silver Thread National Scenic Byway, the campground is a perfect base for exploring regional attractions within a short drive, such as the hiking trails of Uncompahgre Peak or the rugged beauty of Engineer Pass. Its proximity to the charming and historic Lake City adds an extra layer of convenience and cultural exploration to your stay.
