About Grand Island National Recreation Area
Imagine camping on an island where towering 300-foot sandstone cliffs rise from the crystal-clear waters of Lake Superior, and an intricate tapestry of hardwood forests and sandy beaches create a serene escape. The Grand Island National Recreation Area Campground, just a half-mile ferry ride from Munising, Michigan, offers a secluded retreat that embodies backcountry adventure, breathtaking natural features, and remarkable historical sites.
This remote campground features 19 individual sites and 2 group sites, all accessible only by hiking, biking, or boating, ensuring solitude and immersion in nature. Each site is equipped with picnic tables, campfire rings, and bear-proof storage, while amenities like vault toilets and drinking water are available at select locations. Campers must strictly adhere to the pack-in/pack-out principle, as no services or supplies are provided on the island. The island hosts over 30 miles of trails for hiking and mountain biking and provides direct access to pristine beaches and inland lakes, perfect for kayaking, fishing, and swimming in Lake Superior's chilly waters.
Located within the Hiawatha National Forest, the island is a short ferry ride from Munising, which serves as the gateway to nearby attractions such as Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore and Munising Falls. A visit here offers not just camping, but an opportunity to connect deeply with the natural beauty of Michigan’s Upper Peninsula and explore rich cultural landmarks. Whether you're planning a weekend getaway or a longer backcountry adventure, this campground delivers a deeply rewarding escape into the wild.
