Atop the unique Loess Hills landform, Hitchcock Nature Center Campground offers a rare blend of prairie and woodland landscapes, immersive hiking trails, and panoramic vistas that capture the essence of Iowa's natural beauty. This campground provides a diverse range of accommodations, from modern RV sites to primitive backcountry camping, all set against the backdrop of a nationally recognized hawk watching site.
The campground features 18 RV sites with 50-amp electrical hookups, a modern shower house, and a dump station. For those seeking a more rustic experience, tent camping areas and seven primitive backcountry sites are available, allowing campers to fully immerse themselves in the Loess Hills ecosystem. The on-site Loess Hills Lodge houses an exhibit gallery and a 45-foot observation tower, providing educational opportunities and breathtaking views of the surrounding landscape.
Located just 20 minutes from Council Bluffs and Omaha, Hitchcock Nature Center Campground serves as an ideal base for exploring the region's natural wonders. The campground's extensive 10-mile trail system, including a quarter-mile accessible boardwalk, showcases the area's unique flora and fauna. Nearby attractions within a short drive include the Desoto National Wildlife Refuge and the scenic Loess Hills National Scenic Byway, offering additional opportunities for wildlife viewing and scenic drives.
