About Horton Creek Campground
Horton Creek Campground, located about 10 miles north of Bishop, California, offers a rugged and serene camping experience framed by sweeping views of the Eastern Sierra Nevada and White Mountains. This Bureau of Land Management (BLM) facility features 49 spacious campsites alongside Horton Creek, providing a scenic escape with excellent separation between sites for privacy, breathtaking mountain vistas, and simple yet functional amenities. It is a first-come, first-served campground that defies expectations with its peaceful ambiance and proximity to diverse outdoor recreation opportunities.
Campsites, suitable for tents and RVs up to 30 feet, are set on firm dirt and equipped with picnic tables, fire pits, and lantern hooks. Flush toilets are maintained, and visitors appreciate the clean, minimalist setup. The gentle murmur of Horton Creek enhances the natural ambiance, though shade is limited to a few scattered trees. The open layout ensures unobstructed views of landmarks like Mount Tom, Wheeler Crest, and the Volcanic Tablelands.
Positioned at an elevation of 4,975 feet, this campground is an ideal base for a variety of activities within a 30-minute radius. Outdoor enthusiasts can hike, mountain bike, or explore the Tungsten Hills, cast a line in nearby Bishop Creek or Owens River Gorge, or venture to South Lake and Sabrina Lake for prime fishing. The unique rock formations of the Alabama Hills are also within reach, adding an element of adventure and photography opportunities to your stay. A short drive to Bishop provides access to dining, shopping, and cultural attractions like local galleries and museums, ensuring a balanced experience of remote nature and convenient amenities.
