About Indian Trees Campground
How many campgrounds combine historical significance, serene surroundings, and convenient amenities like Indian Trees Campground in the rugged Bitterroot National Forest? Positioned at 5,100 feet elevation and just off Highway 93 near Sula, Montana, this peaceful retreat offers a unique combination of natural beauty and cultural history. Iconic scarred ponderosa pines, used by Native Americans for food extraction, lend the campground its name and a touch of historical charm.
The 16 campsites, suitable for tents, trailers, and RVs (up to 50 feet), provide a functional and inviting atmosphere with picnic tables, fire rings, drinking water, and vault toilets. The layout ensures a sense of privacy, and the peaceful ambiance is further enhanced by a gently flowing creek. While basic, the facilities cater to a comfortable outdoor experience, and the surrounding scenery offers excellent opportunities for hiking, wildlife spotting, and fishing. Trails such as the Nez Perce and Lewis and Clark National Historic Trails are nearby, as is access to the Continental Divide Trail.
Located half a mile from Indian Trees, the Lost Trail Hot Springs provides an odorless, soothing soak—a perfect addition to any camper’s itinerary. The nearby Sula Store (5 miles north) offers groceries and supplies. With its blend of rich local history, tranquil setting, and direct access to the Bitterroot wilderness, Indian Trees Campground is ideal for weekend getaways or longer stays to embrace Montana’s outdoor splendor.
