About Keaīwa Heiau State Recreation Area
Perched in the forested hills of ‘Aiea Heights, the Keaīwa Heiau State Recreation Area campground offers a serene escape where lush eucalyptus and Norfolk pine trees create a tranquil, scent-filled environment. With just 10 campsites available for tent camping on a reservation basis from Friday through Wednesday, this 384-acre park balances accessibility with a sense of exclusivity, making it ideal for a peaceful retreat.
The campground provides basic amenities such as restrooms, showers, picnic tables, and barbecue grills, complemented by nearby picnic pavilions. Nature enthusiasts will appreciate the entrance to the 4.8-mile ‘Aiea Loop Trail, which circles the Halawa Valley ridge and offers rewarding views of Pearl Harbor, Honolulu, and Diamond Head. The trail also features native plant species, remnants from a 1944 plane crash, and diverse bird calls, ensuring a rich hiking experience. Additionally, the Keaīwa Heiau, an ancient healing temple located at the park entrance, lends a culturally enriching dimension to this camping destination.
Located just three miles up from the town of ‘Aiea and approximately a 20-minute drive from Honolulu, the campground provides easy access to urban conveniences while still feeling immersed in nature. Nearby attractions include the historic Pearl Harbor and the Aloha Stadium Swap Meet, making it a versatile base for both relaxation and exploration.
