About Lake James State Park
What makes Lake James State Park's campground in Nebo, North Carolina, standout is its rare offering of diverse camping options, from walk-in and drive-in sites to boat-in-only spots along the picturesque Long Arm Peninsula that immerse guests in unspoiled tranquility. Whether you’re seeking the convenience of drive-to campsites in the Paddy’s Creek Area or the rustic seclusion of paddle-in camping, this campground caters to a wide range of outdoor enthusiasts.
The park encompasses the shores of the expansive 6,812-acre Lake James and offers a variety of camping experiences. The Paddy’s Creek Area features 33 family-friendly, drive-in campsites equipped with picnic tables, fire rings, and tent pads, all near modern bathhouses with hot showers. For those seeking solitude, the Catawba River Area’s 20 walk-in sites offer a more private atmosphere, while 30 boat-access-only campsites on the peninsula provide unique opportunities to camp in serene isolation, though these sites are primitive, requiring guests to pack in all essentials and pack out their trash. Additional amenities include hiking and biking trails, a sandy swimming beach, and boat rentals to explore the lake.
Located just 15 minutes from Marion and Morganton, the park’s proximity to the Blue Ridge Mountains and Linville Gorge Wilderness makes it a perfect base for exploring Western North Carolina's rugged beauty. Campers can enjoy fishing for bass, hiking trails that vary in difficulty, cycling, and spotting wildlife such as bald eagles. This campground is ideal for weekend getaways, peaceful escapes, and outdoor adventures that connect you with the region’s breathtaking natural landscapes.
