Campground Overview
About Lava Point Campground
Perched at a lofty 7,890 feet, Lava Point Campground offers an escape to Zion's lesser-known high country, where tranquil pine forests and sweeping vistas replace the iconic red rock canyons below.
This primitive campground provides a true backcountry experience with just six tent sites tucked among aspen groves. Each site features a picnic table and fire ring, while vault toilets and trash collection round out the basic amenities. The lack of running water and prohibition on vehicles over 19 feet long underscore Lava Point's remote character.
Located on the Kolob Terrace, Lava Point sits about an hour and 20 minutes from Zion Canyon's bustling south entrance. This isolated perch grants campers unparalleled access to Zion's wilderness, with the West Rim Trail leading directly from the campground into the park's backcountry. The nearby Lava Point Overlook offers breathtaking panoramas of Zion's colorful geological tapestry stretching out below.
Lava Point serves as an ideal basecamp for hikers and stargazers seeking solitude. Its high elevation provides welcome relief from summer heat, while fall brings vibrant foliage displays. Wildlife enthusiasts will appreciate opportunities to spot mule deer, wild turkeys, and a variety of bird species in the surrounding forest.
