Lightning Tree Campground

Located on the forested eastern shores of Lake Davis in Northern California’s Plumas National Forest, this campground provides direct access to pristine waters and stunning views, while its well-equipped sites cater to both tent and RV campers.

The campground features 40 well-maintained campsites—some spacious enough for group use—with amenities such as picnic tables, fire rings, grills, and paved parking. Vault toilets and drinking water are available on-site, ensuring a comfortable yet nature-connected experience. While showers are unavailable, they can be accessed at nearby Grasshopper Flat Campground. The lake's 4,000-acre feet of water and 32 miles of shoreline make it a hub for fishing, kayaking, canoeing, and wildlife viewing. Frequent strong winds, however, can make Lake Davis hazardous for smaller watercraft, adding an adventurous element to any visit.

Situated approximately 12 miles from the charming town of Portola, the campground is less than a 30-minute drive from numerous scenic trails and backcountry exploration opportunities. Though rustic, Lightning Tree Campground is the only facility in the area offering larger group sites, making it an excellent choice for families or gatherings. Visitors should be mindful of local wildlife, including bears, and adhere to food storage regulations to ensure safety.
