Campground Overview
About Moundville Archaeological Park
What sets the Moundville Archaeological Park campground apart is its unique positioning within one of North America’s most significant Native American heritage sites, offering guests the rare opportunity to camp amidst the historic, awe-inspiring mounds of a once-thriving Mississippian culture. Located along the scenic Black Warrior River, 13 miles south of Tuscaloosa, this campground combines cultural immersion with natural tranquility, making it ideal for history buffs, nature lovers, and those seeking a serene getaway.
The campground features 34 sites, including RV-friendly slots with full hookups, electric and water sites, and primitive camping options, ensuring accommodations for a variety of camping styles. The grounds include a recently renovated bathhouse (seasonally open from March through November), picnic areas, and quiet, shaded sites that are complemented by the park’s proximity to a half-mile nature trail and stunning riverside views. The park also mandates quiet hours and enforces limited site capacity to preserve a peaceful environment for all campers.
Beyond the campground, visitors can explore the 326-acre archaeological park, home to 29 flat-topped mounds arrayed around a vast central plaza, the Jones Archaeological Museum with immersive exhibits, and the nature trail winding through old-growth hardwood forests. The location offers an exceptional blend of historical exploration and outdoor recreation, making it a prime destination for day trips, weekend escapes, or extended cultural vacations.
