Campground Overview
About Onion Valley Campground
Cradled amidst the rugged peaks of the eastern Sierra Nevada, Onion Valley Campground offers a serene retreat with breathtaking mountain vistas, unparalleled trail access, and an authentic high-altitude wilderness experience. Situated at 9,200 feet, it is a haven for hikers, anglers, and nature enthusiasts seeking solitude without sacrificing convenience.
This relatively small campground features 30 sites with picnic tables, fire rings, and bear-proof storage lockers, ensuring practicality and safety. Vault toilets are available, but there is no potable water, so visitors must bring their own. Despite its proximity to one another, the sites retain a sense of privacy and are surrounded by lodgepole pines, aspens, and vibrant wildflowers during spring and summer. Adventurers are drawn to trailheads leading into the John Muir Wilderness, including the Kearsarge Pass Trail, which offers access to alpine lakes, glacial valleys, and spectacular backcountry vistas. Fishing opportunities abound nearby, with anglers targeting trout in nearby creeks and lakes.
Located 13 miles west of Independence, California, along a winding mountain road, Onion Valley Campground is close to the quaint town for basic supplies. Within a short distance, visitors can immerse themselves in the wilderness while enjoying activities like photography, stargazing, and wildlife viewing. With its tranquil atmosphere and raw natural beauty, this campground is ideal for day trips, weekend getaways, or extended vacations into the Sierra wilderness.
