Penitente Canyon Campground

The campground offers 17 sites, including walk-in tent sites, drive-in tent/RV sites, and group accommodations, all outfitted with picnic tables, fire rings, and grills. Vault toilets, trash collection, and seasonal drinking water (available May through October) enhance its functionality, though visitors should bring backup water. The sites sit amidst rugged volcanic cliffs, created by ancient eruptions, that now host over 300 technical climbing routes suitable for all skill levels. Trails wind through the area, connecting to dramatic rock art, including the Virgen de Guadalupe mural, and offering opportunities for mountain biking, horseback riding, and wildlife viewing. Stargazing and peaceful evenings are hallmarks of this serene campground.

Just eight miles northwest of Del Norte, the campground is easily accessible via County Road 38A. Nearby attractions include the Rio Grande National Forest and the Elephant Rocks Recreation Area, all less than a 30-minute drive away.
