Campground Overview

About Lake Spaulding Campground

Set against the stunning Sierra Nevada backdrop at 5,014 feet elevation, the Lake Spaulding Campground offers intimate lakeside camping with just 25 sites, including 13 walk-in spots ideal for tent campers. Surrounded by a dense ponderosa pine forest and massive granite boulders, this PG&E-managed haven is a blend of serene natural beauty and outdoor recreation, with opportunities for boating, fishing, and hiking directly from the campground.

The facilities are tailored for simplicity, providing picnic tables, fire rings, vault toilets, drinking water, and bear-proof food lockers but no electrical hookups or dump stations. Sites are best suited for tent camping or small campers, while overflow parking accommodates RVs near the boat launch area. Anglers will appreciate the lake's reputation for rainbow and brown trout fishing, while hikers can explore the scenic Spaulding Lake Trail. Though tranquil, the campground is near a train line and highway, which can introduce some noise, making it a better choice for a short escape or day use than long-term stays.

Located just off Interstate 80 near Nevada City, Lake Spaulding is approximately a 30-minute drive from the historic Donner Summit and several other picturesque mountain lakes, such as Fuller and Bowman Lakes. With its rustic charm and access to Sierra recreational gems, Lake Spaulding Campground is an ideal choice for those seeking an active outdoor getaway or a relaxed weekend retreat amid rugged beauty.
