About Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park

Where the rugged terrain of Michigan’s Upper Peninsula meets the vast shores of Lake Superior, Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park offers campers an extraordinary blend of untamed natural beauty, diverse accommodations, and endless outdoor adventures. From the serene, electrical-equipped Union Bay Campground on the lakeshore to the primitive solitude of Presque Isle Campground by the roaring river, campers can choose their preferred level of comfort and connection to nature.

Union Bay Campground caters to modern conveniences with 100 sites featuring electrical hookups, modern restrooms, showers, and even laundry facilities, all against the backdrop of Lake Superior. By contrast, the rustic Presque Isle Campground immerses visitors in nature with its 50 non-electric sites, vault toilets, and access to the Presque Isle River and its striking waterfalls. For an unparalleled wilderness experience, the park also boasts over 65 backcountry campsites, alongside rental rustic cabins and yurts that combine seclusion with basic amenities like woodstoves and bunk beds.

Located near the quiet town of Ontonagon, the park covers nearly 60,000 acres with attractions such as the iconic Lake of the Clouds and Summit Peak observation tower—both within a short drive. Visitors can enjoy 90 miles of hiking trails, explore old-growth forests, or relax along Lake Superior’s unspoiled sand and rocky beaches. Enhanced by its pristine wilderness and accessible amenities, Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park is a prime destination for anything from weekend getaways to extended backcountry adventures.
