Campground Overview
About Railroad Flat Campground
A tranquil haven for nature enthusiasts, Railroad Flat Campground in Midpines, California, is marked by its serene riverside setting, direct access to the Merced River Trail, and historical charm, as it rests along the old Yosemite Valley Railroad grade. This Bureau of Land Management (BLM) campground boasts nine sites, including six drive-up and three walk-in options, providing an intimate camping experience amidst shaded oak and pine trees.
The campground’s amenities include picnic tables, fire rings, and bear-resistant food lockers at each site, with a vault toilet nearby. While potable water is not available on-site, campers will find it just across the Briceburg Bridge. Positioned at the end of Briceburg River Road, approximately 4.5 miles from the suspension bridge, Railroad Flat Campground offers proximity to hiking, fishing, rafting, and seasonal swimming opportunities along the Merced River, especially at its lower flows. A highlight is the Merced River Trail, starting from the campground, which offers breathtaking wildflower displays in spring.
Located around 17 miles from the historic town of Mariposa, the campground is also less than an hour’s drive from Yosemite National Park, making it an ideal base for both quiet weekends and adventurous day trips. However, the rustic nature of the site requires preparation, as RVs or trailers longer than 18 feet are discouraged, and visitors must adhere to the first-come, first-served policy.
