Campground Overview
About Refugio State Beach
Refugio State Beach Campground, located 20 miles west of Santa Barbara near Goleta, California, defies typical beach camping expectations with its tropical atmosphere, shaded palm-lined cove, and serene oceanfront location amid the rugged beauty of the coastline. This campground offers 66 family campsites and three group campsites, all within a short walk to the Pacific Ocean. While the sites accommodate tents, trailers, and motorhomes up to 30 feet, they lack utility hookups, making it ideal for a more traditional, unplugged camping experience.
The campground is split by the leisurely Refugio Creek, which flows into the ocean, creating a sanctuary for birds and wildlife. On-site amenities include picnic tables, fire rings, flush toilets, coin-operated showers, a camp store, and a campfire center. Popular activities include swimming, kayaking, coastal fishing, wildlife viewing, and hiking the Aniso Trail, which connects Refugio to El Capitán State Beach. Families will appreciate the beach’s calm waters and the nearby basketball court and playground, while ocean enthusiasts can enjoy kayaking tours and scuba diving opportunities.
Positioned along the Gaviota Coast, Refugio State Beach Campground is a haven for relaxation and exploration, offering breathtaking views of offshore islands, stunning sunsets, and proximity to Santa Barbara’s attractions. This versatile destination is perfect for weekend escapes, family trips, or extended vacations in a beach setting that balances tranquility with recreational opportunities.
