Campground Overview
About Rock Creek Lake Campground
Perched high in the Eastern Sierra at 9,600 feet, Rock Creek Lake Campground blends serene alpine beauty with exceptional outdoor recreation opportunities. Encircled by scattered aspen and lodgepole pine trees, the campsites offer breathtaking views of Rock Creek Lake’s crystal-clear waters and the dramatic peaks surrounding it, making this a prime location for anglers, hikers, and nature enthusiasts alike.
The campground features 28 well-spaced sites, including walk-in, tent-only sites that maximize privacy and immersion in the surrounding landscape. Each site is equipped with a picnic table, fire ring, and a bear-proof food container to ensure safety against the area's active wildlife, including black bears. Amenities include potable water, vault toilets, and access to firewood for purchase, while the nearby boat ramp and rentals make it easy for visitors to explore the lake. This is a rustic experience—there are no electrical hookups or showers—but its tranquility and charm more than compensate.
Conveniently located off Rock Creek Road, roughly a 30-minute drive from Bishop, California, the campground provides direct access to the John Muir Wilderness. Trails like the Tamarack Trail lead to glacially-carved alpine lakes and ponds, while Rock Creek is a renowned fishing destination stocked with rainbow, brook, and brown trout. Additional nearby activities include horseback riding and photography, all set against the stunning backdrop of the Sierra Nevada. With its cool summer temperatures and awe-inspiring scenery, Rock Creek Lake Campground is ideal for weekend escapes or extended stays for those seeking a true mountain getaway.
