Campground Overview
About Salmon Lake Campground
What sets Salmon Lake Campground apart from typical camping expectations is its serene setting by the lake, where wildlife and history converge in the rugged beauty of Alaska’s Seward Peninsula. This Bureau of Land Management site places you at the edge of Salmon Lake, a critical habitat for sockeye salmon and a seasonal haven for diverse bird species and the occasional grizzly bear.
The campground features six primitive campsites equipped with picnic tables, fire pits, and an outhouse, but no running water, offering a simple yet authentic camping experience. A sandy lakeshore invites swimming, walking, and wildlife observation, while an adjacent abandoned village speaks to the area’s cultural past. Anglers and nature enthusiasts will appreciate the prime location for spotting spawning salmon in mid-August and the rich birdlife that populates the lake in summer.
Located approximately 40 miles north of Nome along Kougarok Road, Salmon Lake Campground offers easy access to the iconic sights and landscapes of the Seward Peninsula. Within a 30-minute drive are glacial valleys, tundra habitats teeming with unique flora and fauna, and opportunities for exploring remnants of Alaska’s mining history. This is an ideal spot for nature-focused getaways, whether it’s a weekend retreat or a longer stay to immerse yourself in the rugged charm of Alaska.
