Campground Overview
About San Luis State Wildlife Area
Experience a distinctive blend of expansive views and serenity at San Luis State Wildlife Area Campground, set against the backdrop of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains and overlooking a seasonal lake. This campground offers sweeping vistas of the Great Sand Dunes National Park and an open, arid environment with wide campsites that cater to both RV travelers and tent campers, complete with electrical hookups and shaded picnic tables.
Located just 15 minutes west of the Great Sand Dunes Visitor Center, the campground is an ideal base for exploring the dunes, birdwatching, or venturing to nearby natural attractions such as Zapata Falls. While its amenities include fire rings, a dump station, and pit toilets, there is no potable water available, so campers must bring their own supplies. The absence of trees provides spectacular stargazing opportunities but can also result in strong winds, especially in the evening.
This first-come, first-served site delivers a tranquil and uncrowded atmosphere with excellent wildlife watching in its wetlands, making it an authentic Colorado retreat for nature enthusiasts. Note that access requires a valid Colorado hunting or fishing license or an SWA pass.
