Campground Overview
About South Branch Pond Campground
Isolated in the remote northern reaches of Baxter State Park, South Branch Pond Campground offers an authentic wilderness retreat defined by its tranquil ponds, rugged mountain views, and immersive access to nature. This primitive campground is perfect for campers seeking a serene escape, with features like waterfront lean-tos, access to pristine hiking trails, and opportunities for canoeing or kayaking right from the site.
The campground includes a mix of 21 tent sites, 12 lean-tos (eight located along the pond’s edge), and a bunkhouse with an eight-person capacity. Amenities are intentionally minimal, with outhouses and a communal firewood supply provided, underscoring the park’s conservation-first ethos. The campground serves as a trailhead for the challenging Traveler Loop Trail, as well as family-friendly hikes like South Branch Falls. Canoe rentals are available onsite, allowing campers to explore the peaceful waters of Lower South Branch Pond.
Located approximately 33.5 miles west of Patten, South Branch Pond Campground is an ideal base for exploring Baxter State Park's untouched wilderness. Within a 30-minute drive, visitors can enjoy scenic roads and additional trail networks while immersing themselves in Maine’s unspoiled landscapes. Though supplies must be brought in due to the campground’s remote nature, the unparalleled beauty, quiet environment, and abundant outdoor activities make this a coveted destination for nature enthusiasts.
