About Steens Mountain Wilderness Resort
Isolated amidst the striking high desert landscape of southeastern Oregon, Steens Mountain Wilderness Resort offers a unique blend of rustic charm and modern amenities, making it a prime choice for those seeking quiet seclusion, vast starry skies, and proximity to the storied Steens Mountain area.
Located just three miles east of the tiny community of Frenchglen, this privately managed campground spans 16 acres overlooking the southern edge of the Malheur National Wildlife Refuge and the Donner und Blitzen River. The resort accommodates a range of camping preferences with over 38 full hook-up RV sites, 14 tent sites shaded by grass and trees (many with water and electricity), and fully equipped cabins available year-round that include kitchens, showers, and climate control. Essential comforts like clean restrooms, showers, laundry facilities, and a general store enhance the overall convenience. However, privacy between campsites is limited, a trade-off for the site's efficiency focus.
The surrounding wilderness makes it an excellent base for exploring the dramatic gorges, diverse wildlife, and birding opportunities of Steens Mountain and the refuge, all within a short drive. With one of the darkest night skies in the country, the resort also draws stargazers and astronomy enthusiasts. Whether for day trips, peaceful weekend getaways, or extended vacations, Steens Mountain Wilderness Resort invites travelers to experience the high desert's tranquility and natural spectacles.
