About The Pocket Recreation Area
Surrounded by the dramatic ridges of Horn and Mill Mountains, The Pocket Recreation Area Campground in northwest Georgia offers a tranquil escape for campers seeking natural beauty, peace, and outdoor adventure. The campground's serene setting, enhanced by vibrant spring wildflowers and autumn foliage, is complemented by its historical roots as a former Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) worksite, with remnants of the camp still visible.
This 26-site campground within the Chattahoochee-Oconee National Forest features basic amenities like paved parking spurs, gravel tent pads, picnic tables, fire rings, and lantern posts at each site, along with centrally located flush toilets and potable water hydrants. While there are no electrical hookups or showers, the campground's simplicity is part of its appeal, inviting visitors to unplug and reconnect with nature. Adjacent to a creek, it offers a soothing backdrop for relaxation or wading during warmer months.
Located approximately 25 miles west of Dalton, Georgia, The Pocket is an ideal base for exploring local attractions. Trails like the 1-mile Pocket Interpretive Trail and the 2.5-mile Pocket Loop Trail meander through forests teeming with deer, turkeys, and songbirds, providing accessible hiking opportunities. Nearby Johns Mountain Overlook offers stunning views of the Armuchee Valley, while trout fishing enthusiasts can enjoy casting a line in Johns Creek just a short distance away. For families and history buffs, the Pocket Picnic Area, with its CCC-built spring box and reservable shelter, provides an additional spot to learn, picnic, or relax.
