About Tow String Horse Camp
Tow String Horse Camp offers a rustic equestrian camping experience in the heart of the renowned Great Smoky Mountains National Park, just four miles from Cherokee, North Carolina. With its focus on horseback riding, this small campground features direct access to miles of scenic trails surrounded by diverse wildlife and cultural history, creating a unique retreat for horse enthusiasts.
The campground is exclusively for visitors with horses, featuring only three sites that each include a 16x16-foot tent pad, picnic table, lantern post, and fire ring. A 12-stall horse stable is also available, though horses are not housed directly at the campsites. Amenities are basic, with portable toilets and a nearby stream for horse water needs, ensuring an immersive backcountry atmosphere. The campground's layout on a sloping hill provides a peaceful and intimate setting for equestrians seeking solitude and connection with nature.
Located near Cherokee, campers are a short drive from notable attractions such as the Oconaluftee Visitor Center, historic Mingus Mill, and the Museum of the Cherokee Indian—all within 30 minutes. Additional outdoor opportunities include fishing in pristine streams, hiking, or experiencing the cultural richness of the nearby Eastern Band of Cherokee Indian community. With its specialized facilities and access to the Smokies’ equestrian and hiking trails, Tow String Horse Camp is a perfect base for multi-day riding adventures or nature-focused getaways.
