Campground Overview
About Trapper Springs Campground
What sets Trapper Springs Campground apart is its seamless blend of tranquil riverside camping and exceptional outdoor recreation opportunities. Located adjacent to Montana’s lower Madison River, this Bureau of Land Management-managed campground is perfect for those seeking fishing, floating, or simply enjoying the area’s natural beauty. With a convenient location near the Bear Trap Canyon unit of the Lee Metcalf Wilderness and Norris Hot Springs, this campground offers amazing access to nearby attractions within a 30-minute drive.
This small, well-maintained site features 15 campsites, each equipped with fire pits and picnic tables, as well as amenities like accessible vault toilets and an ADA-compliant trail leading to the river. While there is no direct boat launch on-site, several launch points are nearby, making it an excellent base for fly-fishers and floaters drawn to the Madison River’s reputation as one of Montana’s premier trout fisheries. The campground also offers a group-use pavilion with enough parking for 20 vehicles, catering to larger gatherings or day-use visitors.
Situated just 9 miles northeast of Norris along State Route 289, Trapper Springs provides both convenience and a sense of seclusion. Its proximity to iconic attractions like Bear Trap Canyon and Norris Hot Springs ensures activities like hiking, wildlife viewing, and soaking in geothermal pools are within easy reach. Note that its water system is typically winterized until early spring, so visitors should plan to bring their own water during colder months.
