About West Tensleep Lake
How does a peaceful alpine lake framed by dense evergreen forest and set against towering mountain peaks sound for your next outdoor escape? West Tensleep Lake Campground offers a serene retreat perfect for anglers, hikers, and those seeking immersion in Wyoming’s natural grandeur. Positioned at an elevation of 8,600 feet in the Bighorn National Forest, the campground is defined by its rustic charm, clear mountain air, and direct access to some of the region's most scenic wilderness trails.
Campsites are located along the southern shore of the 125-acre West Tensleep Lake, which is restricted to non-motorized watercraft, making it a haven for kayakers and canoe enthusiasts. Each site is outfitted with picnic tables, fire pits, and close access to drinking water and well-maintained vault toilets. The highlight for adventurers is the West Tensleep Lake Trail, leading into the Cloud Peak Wilderness, where you can explore alpine lakes, meadows, and summits like the 13,167-foot Cloud Peak. Wildlife such as moose and trout are abundant, enhancing the area’s appeal to nature lovers.
Situated about 56 miles from the town of Worland via scenic U.S. Highway 16, the campground is also near Meadowlark Lake and the historic High Park Lookout, both within a short drive. With no cell service and a quiet, undeveloped setting, this campground is ideal for a weekend getaway or an extended retreat to disconnect and appreciate Wyoming’s wild beauty.
