Campground Overview
About Wheeler Gorge Campground
Wheeler Gorge Campground, located just 15 miles north of Ojai along the striking Highway 33 corridor, stands out for its scenic creekside setting, historic charm, and convenient access to Los Padres National Forest. Combining the natural beauty of oak and sycamore groves with the soothing ambiance of a flowing creek, this campground provides a rustic yet idyllic escape for campers seeking relaxation or adventure.
The campground features 74 sites suited for both tents and RVs up to 35 feet long, complete with picnic tables, fire rings, and grills. While vault toilets are available, campers must bring their own water. Numerous sites offer shaded locations near Matilija Creek, though summer heat may leave the creek dry. Unique attractions include the Wheeler Gorge Nature Trail, a gentle 0.7-mile loop that winds through lush vegetation and offers hillside views, as well as an amphitheater hosting educational programs. The historic stone structures built nearly a century ago by Boy Scouts add a touch of character to the site.
Situated near Ojai, Wheeler Gorge provides excellent proximity to local dining, hiking trails, and the Wheeler Gorge Visitor Center, where forest maps and ranger-led tours enhance the experience. Whether for a weekend getaway or a longer retreat, this campground's blend of natural serenity and accessibility makes it a standout choice for nature enthusiasts.
