A sanctuary for outdoor enthusiasts, the Wilderness Gateway Campground near Kooskia, Idaho, pairs unparalleled natural beauty with direct access to the untamed Lochsa River, renowned for its world-class whitewater rafting. Set at an elevation of 2,100 feet within Nez Perce-Clearwater National Forests, this campground offers hiking trails into the expansive Selway-Bitterroot Wilderness, equestrian facilities, and campsites shaded by towering trees and lush vegetation.
The campground boasts 91 sites, accommodating tents, RVs up to 50 feet, and equestrian campers in the dedicated Loop D, equipped with hitching rails, feed mangers, and water troughs. Amenities include potable water, flush and vault toilets, picnic tables, fire rings with grills, and a large group site that can host up to 208 people. Trails like the 15-mile Lochsa Peak Trail and 27-mile Boulder Creek Trail start right on-site, and a one-mile birding trail loops through the picturesque terrain. For fishing enthusiasts, the crystal-clear Lochsa River delivers excellent opportunities to catch cutthroat trout.
Located 25 miles east of Lowell along the Northwest Passage Scenic Byway (US Highway 12), Wilderness Gateway Campground is within a short drive of the Lochsa Historical Ranger Station.
