Campground Overview
About Angel Creek Campground
The crisp scent of aspen groves mingling with alpine air welcomes visitors to Angel Creek Campground, where 6,200-foot elevation delivers cooler temperatures and panoramic views of the East Humboldt Range. This 18-site facility blends accessibility with mountain solitude, featuring paved RV spurs accommodating rigs up to 45 feet alongside secluded tent pads tucked among wildflower meadows.
Mature aspens create dappled shade across the campground, their golden fall foliage contrasting with summer's lupine and paintbrush blooms. Each site includes a picnic table and steel fire ring, with firewood available from seasonal hosts. The nearby tent-only group area accommodates 30 campers across six vehicle spaces, featuring an accessible group fire circle. Vault toilets and drinking water stations maintain basic comforts without diminishing the rustic atmosphere.
Eight miles southwest of Wells via Angel Lake Road, the campground serves as basecamp for exploring the Ruby Mountains subrange. Four miles up the same road, Angel Lake's turquoise waters offer canoeing and brook trout fishing beneath cliffs frequented by bighorn sheep. The Smith Lake Trailhead provides direct access to alpine lakes, while stargazers benefit from minimal light pollution. Day-trippers can combine high-country hiking with provisions from Wells' historic downtown, though the campground's peaceful evenings and cool mountain air often persuade visitors to extend their stay.
