About Angel of Shavano Campground
Is there a better place to experience the tranquility of high-altitude camping than a site surrounded by aspens and the soothing hum of a mountain river? Angel of Shavano Campground, situated at 9,200 feet in the Pike and San Isabel National Forests, offers an idyllic retreat for nature lovers. This first-come, first-served campground features 20 sites that cater primarily to tent campers, though smaller RVs and pop-ups up to 30 feet are welcome. Each site is equipped with a picnic table, fire ring, and grill, and amenities include vault toilets and hand-pump drinking water.
Located just 15 miles west of Salida, Colorado, the campground is a perfect base for outdoor enthusiasts. The Colorado Trail crosses directly by the campground, providing access to hiking routes that lead to Mount Shavano and its iconic Angel of Shavano snowfield. Anglers will enjoy casting in the North Fork South Arkansas River, while the surrounding forest is ideal for birdwatching and wildlife spotting. For added adventure, the nearby North Fork reservoir offers fishing in a high-elevation lake, accessible via a rugged forest road.
Angel of Shavano Campground is perfectly positioned for combining solitude with exploration. A short 30-minute drive to Salida adds opportunities for whitewater rafting, local culture, and other mountain-town amenities, making this campground an exceptional choice for a weekend getaway or an extended wilderness escape.
