Campground Overview
About Bear Butte State Park
What sets Bear Butte State Park Campground apart is its profound sense of serenity, steeped in natural beauty and rich cultural history, right on the doorstep of the sacred Bear Butte. Situated just six miles northeast of Sturgis, South Dakota, the campground offers a tranquil escape with panoramic views of Bear Butte Lake and easy access to the park’s remarkable hiking trails.
This small, first-come, first-served campground features 15 non-electric campsites and an additional 4 sites for horse camping. Each site is equipped with a picnic table, fire ring, and nearby water spigots, while vault toilets ensure essential comfort. The lack of hookups means it’s best suited for tent camping and self-sufficient RVs. Direct access to the 2.5-mile Lake Trail and the northernmost portion of the Centennial Trail enhances its allure for hikers, while the fishing dock and boat ramp at Bear Butte Lake cater to anglers and paddlers alike.
Bear Butte itself, a striking igneous rock formation sacred to numerous Native American tribes, offers a profound cultural experience. Visitors should tread respectfully, especially when encountering prayer cloths or ceremonies. Beyond the campground, the park’s Summit Trail provides a challenging hike with stunning vistas, and the nearby town of Sturgis ensures supplies and amenities are within a 15-minute drive.
