Campground Overview
About Bear Gulch Group Campground
Rugged isolation and pristine wilderness define Bear Gulch Group Campground, a secluded haven nestled in the forested Black Hills of South Dakota. This private access site offers an unparalleled group camping experience, with eight individual tent sites encircling a central parking area that can accommodate up to 40 people. Overlooking a tranquil bay on Pactola Reservoir, the campground provides a perfect blend of natural beauty and primitive comfort.
Located just 20 miles southwest of Rapid City, Bear Gulch offers a true escape into nature while remaining within reach of urban amenities. The campground's position in the heart of the Black Hills National Forest puts campers in prime territory for exploring some of South Dakota's most iconic landscapes. Mount Rushmore National Memorial, Custer State Park, and the scenic Spearfish Canyon are all within an hour's drive, offering a wealth of outdoor recreation and sightseeing opportunities.
The campground's facilities strike a balance between rustic and functional. A newly installed accessible toilet and hand pump for drinking water provide essential amenities, while each site features a flat area, picnic table, and fire ring for a classic camping setup. The absence of electrical hookups and the nine-mile journey down dirt roads to reach the site ensure a genuine off-grid experience. For water enthusiasts, the 800-acre Pactola Reservoir offers excellent opportunities for fishing, swimming, and even scuba diving, with boat rentals available at a nearby marina.
