About Black Bear Group Campground

Black Bear Group Campground, perched at 9,000 feet in the Sacramento Mountains, offers an extraordinary escape where the aromatic pine and aspen forest meets expansive desert valley views. Located just 1.4 miles south of Cloudcroft, New Mexico, this site combines an engaging mix of natural beauty, abundant wildlife like elk and deer, and the chance to experience the legendary home of Smokey Bear.

Designed for group camping, the site accommodates up to 70 people and features practical amenities such as a covered pavilion, picnic tables, fire pits, grills, and a vault toilet. The tranquil surroundings are ideal for stargazing on clear nights or exploring the nearby Rim Trail, a favorite for hiking, mountain biking, and horseback riding. However, campers should note that no water is available on-site, although it can be accessed seasonally at nearby Deerhead Campground.

Black Bear Group Campground’s proximity to Cloudcroft provides unique opportunities to explore the village's charming attractions. Highlights include historic sites like the Mexican Canyon Railroad Trestle and access to other trails in Lincoln National Forest. Less than a 30-minute drive, outdoor enthusiasts might also enjoy trips to scenic spots like the Sunspot Scenic Byway or the Tularosa Basin overlook.
