Campground Overview
About Black Canyon Campground - Lower
Tucked away in a tranquil, remote forest clearing, the Black Canyon Campground - Lower offers a pristine escape for adventurers seeking solitude, natural beauty, and simplicity. A lush meadow flanked by a bubbling stream awaits campers, creating an idyllic setting for those traveling by high-clearance 4x4 vehicles on the rugged FR 150 road.
This primitive campground provides a handful of essential amenities, including a newer vault toilet, and operates on a pack-in, pack-out principle to preserve its untouched environment. Campers will delight in the direct access to Trail #94, a scenic 8.6-mile out-and-back hike leading into the Gila Wilderness. The area is also a haven for wildlife, with frequent sightings of elk, deer, and birds.
Located approximately 30 miles from the small town of Mimbres, New Mexico, the campground is within easy reach of the Gila National Forest’s breathtaking landscapes. Black Canyon's remote charm and minimal infrastructure make it an excellent choice for day hikes, unplugged weekend retreats, or longer stays to immerse in the serene wilderness.
