Campground Overview
About Canyon Campground
Canyon Campground in Yellowstone National Park is set in a dense lodgepole pine forest just minutes from the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone, offering a classic wooded setting with easy access to some of the park’s most iconic scenery. Its central location and full suite of amenities make it one of the most convenient and well-equipped campgrounds in the park.
Less than a mile from the canyon’s overlooks and waterfalls, the campground features a mix of tent, RV, and combination sites, each with a picnic table and fire grate. Potable water and flush toilets are available throughout, and overnight stays include access to showers and laundry—an uncommon perk in Yellowstone. Sites are generally level and well maintained, though privacy varies depending on the loop, with some more open and sunny than others.
Canyon’s central position makes it ideal for day trips to Hayden Valley, Mount Washburn, and other popular destinations. Onsite amenities like a visitor center, general store, dining options, and fuel add practical convenience, while ranger programs and evening talks enhance the experience for families and groups.
While the campground’s size and popularity contribute to a lively, communal feel, its wooded environment and proximity to major sights make it a standout basecamp. Compared to Bridge Bay, Canyon trades lake views for superior shade and direct access to the Grand Canyon’s trails and overlooks—ideal for campers focused on hiking, wildlife viewing, and exploring the heart of the park.
